Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the points lead from his teammate by just one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, topped the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver throughout the hour before sprint qualifying set to begin at the evening session. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, sitting 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his team ran a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, though minor, when he rotated at Turn Four soon after starting. The Japanese lost control over the curbs on exit before spinning across the gravel trap, and was lucky to get away with just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the very end of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed Mergulho turn before the final bend on to the pit straight. The veteran ended the session in 19th place, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber P3, 0.619 seconds slower than Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
