The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
